Kent State University has announced that Motorcycle Ohio rider safety courses will be offered at both Kent State University at Salem and Kent State University at Trumbull beginning the first weekend in April. The courses are offered in partnership with the Ohio Department of Public Safety. 

Passing this 16-hour program allows successful completers to waive the skills test required for motorcycle endorsement/licensing. The class consists of 4-hours in the classroom and 12-hours on the range, learning and practicing riding skills using program-provided motorcycles and helmets. The program also focuses on motorcycle licensing, motorist awareness, impaired riding and protective gear usage.

As new program sponsors, Kent State Salem and Kent State Trumbull Workforce Development plan to support the hiring of local, state-certified instructors to teach these classes. In addition to the program's training effort, the university will participate in a public information and education campaign to promote the rider education program and motorcycle safety.

Participants pay a $25 fee, which is waived for minors, who are required to take this class to become a licensed motorcycle rider. Parents or guardians must sign to acknowledge the risks and agreement to have their youth participate.

The completion of this training, along with a motorcycle temporary permit, will allow the rider to receive their motorcycle endorsement at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. Some insurance companies offer a reduced rate to those who complete the program.

New riders are encouraged to sign up for this Basic Rider Course (BRC), which can also act as a refresher for those with some riding experience.
