On her way through East Liverpool via the Ohio River, internationally known swimmer Mimi Hughes stopped at Kent State East Liverpool to speak with students, staff and area residents about her goal of swimming the length of the Ohio River. Hughes is looking to swim 981 miles in 57 days in an effort to bring attention to the disparity between opportunities and education for men and women. In the past, Hughes has swam to Russia from Alaska in an effort to bring peace and healing between nations. She also swam the Tennessee River to promote environmental responsibility and the Danube River, which snakes through eight European countries in support of environmental and social responsibility. Two years ago she swam Europe's Frava and Mura Rivers to promote the same causes.  During her presentation, Hughes spoke about the need to educate women and encouraged students to "keep the ball rolling," so that they finished their education.
