Nursing Students Featured in Town Crier
Lots of smiles and even some foot-stomping took place Dec. 8 at Humility House, 755 Ohltown Road in Austintown. It was a farewell party hosted by Kent State University nursing students who have been in clinical rotation at the facility.

Kent State Salem to Pursue New Bachelor's Degree
Kent State University at Salem is looking to bring a bachelor’s degree of insurance and risk management to the area. By engaging corporations and private individuals in an ongoing relationship, Kent State University Salem plans on implementing an insurance program in the spring of 2012.

International Music Troupe to Come to East Liverpool
International Music Troupe to Come to East Liverpool
Mauvais Sort, a Quebec City folk-rock ensemble will perform at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 23 at Westgate Auditorium in East Liverpool, Ohio. The troupe, named Best Canadian Folk Ensemble of the year in 2006, has performed more than 600 shows in nine countries. Their fifth album, Droit Devant, has been recently released. Mauvais Sort creates world beat rhythms through the use of accordion, violin, guitar, bass, mandolin, drums, percussion and male and female vocals, producing a toe-tapping exercise in joie de vivre.
Mauvais Sort is being brought to Northeastern Ohio and the East Liverpool area by the Ohio Arts Council’s International Music and Performing Arts in Communities Tour (IMPACT) that sponsors these free concerts to expose new audiences to art forms from around the world and to build new audiences for the arts.
The East Liverpool stop is the final one on a tour that will play Columbus, Wilmington, Wapakoneta, and Cambridge during the month of November. In addition to sponsorship from the Ohio Arts Council, the concert is sponsored by the Ohio Alliance for Arts Education, Arts Midwest, and the National Endowment for the Arts. The local performance is also sponsored by Kent State University at East Liverpool; ABLE and Appalachian Cottage Industries; LEEP (Leading Economic and Educational Progress); Shining Reflections; East Liverpool Lions; and the East Liverpool-Wellsville NAACP.
Westgate Middle School is located at 810 Eighth Street, East Liverpool, just off Routes 7 and 11. Tickets for the event are free, and the concert is open to the public. Contact Patti Swartz 330-397-5749 or pswartz@kent.edu for more information.

Free Health Clinic at Kent State Salem Nov. 4th
Kent State University at Salem will offer a free health clinic on Nov. 4 from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. in the campus' main lobby. Kent State Salem is located at 2491 St. Rt. 45 S, in Salem. Free screenings include those for the ears, kidneys and blood pressure will be provided.

McFadden Joins Kent State Columbiana County Campuses
Timothy McFadden has joined the staff of Kent State University’s East Liverpool and Salem Campuses as the new academic program director for applied business technologies. In this role McFadden will oversee four associate degree programs: Accounting Technology, Business Technology, Computer Technology and Information Technology for Administrative Professionals. He will also oversee the Bachelor’s of Business Administration, which students can pursue in conjunction to one of the aforementioned associate degrees.

PBS Screening of Country Crush Slated for September 1st
A free screening of Country Crush, a new documentary about the combine demolition derby at the Columbiana County Fair, will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 1, at 7 p.m. at Kent State University Salem City Center Campus. Country Crush is the story of the wacky, weird combine demolition derby, a sport where giant old combines face off in a battle of metal-bending prowess.

Kent State Salem Students Beautify Campus, Courthouse
Students at Kent State University at Salem saved tax payers more than $20,000 when reconstructing the front entryway of the campus during their summer classes. Participants of the landscape construction class improved the main entryway aesthetically while also increasing the visibility of entrance and exit, which will improve safety.

Assistant Nursing Professor Lorene Martin recently won one of Kent State University’s Summer Teaching Awards. Martin, who teaches at Kent State University at Salem, is spending the summer developing a student mentoring program known as "Students Helping Students: A Student Nurse Mentoring Program”

CPR Classes Available for $25.00
Kent State University at East Liverpool is offering CPR classes, specifically those students in occupational therapy, physical therapy and nursing. The cost is $25 for the four-hour session. Pre-registration and payment is required. The public is welcome to attend, too, as long as space is available.

Kent State Student Sets Eyes on 2012 Paralympics
Kent State Salem student Chelsi Figley isn’t your typical college student. Blonde and sparkly eyed, she is focused not only on receiving her certificate in medical billing and coding this August, but more importantly, achieving a place on the 2012 Paralympic Games in London. To do so, Figley will first need to compete in the International Paralympic Committee’s (IPC) Powerlifting World Championships July 25-31 in Kudar Lumpur, Malaysia. Though Figley will try to lift and hold 170 pounds for the event, she is shouldering the cost of the competition herself.

Woman Swimming Length of Ohio River to Visit East Liverpool
Mimi Hughes, born in 1956, teaches learning-challenged children in Lynchburg, Tennessee. During the summer of 2010, Mimi will swim the 981 miles of the Ohio River to raise funds and awareness for organizations that support the life skills and academic education of girls.

More than 20 students will give presentations during Kent State at Salem's Undergraduate Research Conference, held on Wednesday. The conference will feature oral presentations and poster sessions by students about research they completed in for-credit classes at the Salem Campus during the 2009-2010 academic year. This is the campus’ fifth annual conference.

Students from across the Kent State University eight-campus system are coming to Columbiana County as part of the University’s “Alternative Spring Break” program. The week-long event pairs teams of college students with area non-profit organizations. Each day, students will head out to a worksite and volunteer doing a range of activities.

Kent State Salem Campus Announces Symphonious Sunday Series
Broadway show tunes sung by budding artists and a choral concert of classical and familiar music will be the features of Kent State at Salem’s Symphonious Sunday Series this spring. Both concerts held on March 21 and May 2, will begin at 3 p.m. in the campus’ City Center Auditorium, located in downtown Salem.
