James W. Moore, president and general manager of MarketSource Agency Network, LLC, wasn't planning on attending Kent State University at Salem. "I was originally going to attend a different college, and decided very late in the process to go to Kent State," Moore says. "The Salem campus did an excellent job of getting me registered at (literally) the last minute. That sort of personal attention and flexibility was something I experienced during the entire two years I attended."
Although the decision was last minute, Moore says there was a certain comfort being close to home. Plus, by starting at the Salem campus and finishing at the Kent campus, Moore could earn any Kent State University degree he wanted. "My options were completely open for how I wanted my degree path to unfold. I knew I wanted a degree in business, but the actual major was something I was unsure of," he says.
Moore said the personal attention one receives at a regional campus is hard to duplicate at a larger campus. "I hardly ever saw my main campus professors outside of the classroom, but the professors at the Salem campus were always around, willing to help," Moore says.
Moore advises students that their college career will be a direct reflection on the fruit of their labor. "The resources available to you at the Salem campus are more than sufficient to give you an excellent education that will serve you well in the marketplace," he says. "You have the attention of your professors – take advantage of that. There will still be plenty of time for fun on the weekend, trust me. I've used the things I've learned from my degree in finance in every job I've held. The education has served me well."
Following graduation, Moore worked as a commercial lines manager at Patrons Mutual before founding The Moore Agency, Inc., a sole proprietorship. The Moore Agency, based in Salem, Ohio, is a multi-line independent insurance, accounting and financial services firm. Moore has gone on to work for seven other startup businesses either as the founder or as a senior manager (usually in a sales or marketing role).
"I love starting a business from scratch and creating something from nothing," he says. "Everything counts in a startup; everything is new and fresh and results are a direct reflection of your effort."
