SALEM CAMPUS MISSION STATEMENT
May 26, 1989

As a campus in the Kent State University system, the Salem Campus shares the Role, Mission, and Educational Goals of the University.  Moreover, as a campus located in this particular place in Columbiana County, the Salem Campus has its own unique character, educational climate, and commitments to the students it serves.  The following expresses its unique philosophy, mission, and objectives.

The Salem Campus of Kent State University recognizes the dignity and worth of all human beings and believes that post-secondary education should be available to all who can benefit from it.  The Campus further believes that education should be a rewarding experience offered in an environment that fosters the growth and well-being of all members of the community it serves.

Therefore, Kent Salem accepts a responsibility for developing and maintaining appropriate educational programs and supportive services responsive to the needs of the community.  To meet these needs, the campus emphasizes accessible, personalized academic advising and high quality instruction in courses and workshops ranging from the developmental to the graduate.  While concentrating on academic and technical instruction, the campus also promotes a variety of activities to enhance student life.

In accordance with this philosophy, the campus sets for itself the following objectives:

**  To provide students with marketable career skills through associate degree programs.

**  To assist students in beginning baccalaureate programs.

**   To provide students the opportunity to improve basic skills, in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and mathematics.

**  To provide students with information about self-assessment, the nature and requirements of career opportunities, and job search services.

**  To assist students in discovering and developing attitudes and skills necessary to achieve education goals and enhance lifelong learning.

**  To provide students the opportunity for personal growth and development through social, physical, professional, and cultural activities.

**  To inform the community about available programs and services.

**  To respond to other community educational needs within the limits of available fiscal
and staff resources.
